Auto accidents can alter your life. There is insurance coverage mandated by the legislature to assist you in an accident
situation.
There are four types of automobile insurance that every automobile owner must have by law. Most people are not aware
of these types until they are involved in an automobile accident.
LIABILITY
COVERAGE: This covers damages sustained by others who are injured in an
automobile accident to the extent to which you may be at fault. The
minimum amount of liability insurance you must purchase in Minnesota is
$30,000.00.
NO-FAULT
COVERAGE (or Personal Injury Protection): This covers medical expenses
and wage loss for you and others involved in an automobile accident
regardless of fault. Wage loss coverage replaces 80% of your weekly
wage loss up to $250.00 per week. The minimum amount of no fault
coverage is $20,000.00 in medical benefits and $20,000.00 in wage loss.
UNDERINSURED
MOTORIST COVERAGE: If your injuries are the fault of another driver,
and your damages exceed his or her liability coverage, you are allowed
to claim the excess damages on your own underinsured motorist policy.
You may purchase any amount of coverage, with a minimum of $25,000.00
by state law.
UNINSURED
MOTORIST COVERAGE: If you are injured in an automobile accident caused
by a motorist who is uninsured, your own uninsured motorist coverage
pays for your damages. This coverage is limited by the amount of the
liability policy that you purchased. The minimum amount you must buy in
Minnesota is $25,000.00.
In
addition, there is optional comprehensive coverage which pays for
damage to your automobile caused by fire, theft, vandalism, and other
perils. There is also optional collision coverage, which pays for
damages to your car in the event of an accident.
